Fish and Famine
Some of you may be wondering what I did and what I got for my 25th birthday. Well on the gift side of things, I’m GETTING A CANON DIGITAL REBEL XT. The only reason I haven’t gotten it yet as it hasn’t been ordered yet (as I’m trying to decide if I want it in silver or black). Decisions, decisions. Tobin also got me a book on Digital Photography, AND the first/only season of “Keen Eddie“. lol Did you ever watch that show? Tobin and were disappointed when they pulled it off the air! So far we’ve only watched the first episode but I’m looking forward to a rainy day (hmm it’s rainy today) when we can pop in the DVD’s and watch some more.Back to the camera. I’m super excited! A week ago I borrowed my brother’s camera… I took some pretty sweet shots of the
Seattle night skyline with his camera. And now in the not-too-distant future I’ll be getting a camera of my own! Sweet! My parents also gave me some money to cover the cost of my first lens. I want both a telephoto and a macro lens – I think I’ll start with the telephoto, and treat myself to the macro lens when I get some spare change (ok, maybe a lot of change).
My dad and my brother both have the camera, so you know I’ll be calling them for help on figuring out the camera. Daddy’s got a pretty sweet lens that he can take low-light pictures with – without a tripod. I’m sure it was really expensive, and I’m also pretty sure that’s not what my first extra lens will be (as I also want to go to college). lol I’ll let you know what I get!
Fish
So on to what I did for my birthday… Well Tobin gave me the gifts mentioned above, then he took me out to McCormick and Schmicks at Union Bay. Wow it was really nice! He made reservations and told them it was for my birthday. So when we got there, they seated us at a window seat, and printed “Happy Birthday†on the menus. What a nice touch. For the appetizer we split an order of oysters (breaded with blue cheese – yum!) For the main course, I got King Salmon with pear. Man that was good!!! Tobin got Mahi Mahi with a peanut sauce. It was good, but nowhere to the quality of my Salmon! Then we had desserts on the house – I had an apple pie – and Tobin ordered the biggest dessert they had – I think it had ice cream, brownies, whipped cream, etc. in it.
So that was my birthday. It was quite fun.
Famine
Glad we got to eat well for my birthday, because the next morning starting at 9, we started fasting for the 30-hour famine! For that event, we all met at the church at 6:30 and headed up to Overlake in Redmond for a 30-hour famine evening… Basically that consisted of some speakers and some worship. It was nice. Then we headed back down to Des Moines. The girls ended up staying in Des Moines with Barb, and the boys stayed with Tobin. Yep it was an overnighter. With the exception of being kicked in the head a few times by Chelsie, I had a good nights sleep (I’m a pretty heavy sleeper – which comes in very handy when chaperoning youth events!).
The next morning, we all piled into the 15-passenger van, and headed up to the Burien Safeway where we started selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts. We had about 30 boxes to sell, and we sold 25 of them during the time my team was at Safeway (about 3 hours or so). There were four teams of three. Two of the teams stayed at Safeway (my team was a part of that group), and the other team went out and canvassed the rich areas of Normandy Park looking for donations to World Vision. Then around 1:00 pm we switched, and the other group sold doughnuts, and we went looking for donations. Boy I was so hungry I was sure I was going to pass out on somebody’s doorstep. Luckily, I didn’t. J All in all, we raised about $600. $1 will feed a kid for a day, and our goal was to feed one kid for a year. We definitely meet that goal!
How did we break the famine, you ask? With hotdogs and chips of course. lol Oh, and we also played a pretty entertaining game of “Who, What, Where?†Fun stuff.

hey you played who what where? i know where you learned that game :)
I learned from the best. It’s become a new fav with us. Maybe someday we’ll buy the game, but for now I wonder if it’s almost more fun making it up as we go! :-)
