Sailing in Seattle & More

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 at 12:58 am

My parents spent 2 weeks in Mexico, and got back the weekend before last. I meant to write about our time with them, but couldn’t find the time, so here goes! :)

20070909-42

My parents got into SeaTac at around 11pm Friday (Sept 7th) after spending 2 weeks in 20070908-2Playa del Carmen, Mexico. From what I hear they had a wonderful time though it was a bit harrowing for me watching all the hurricanes on the news! Luckily none of the hurricanes that were going during that time hit land close to where they are (though the closest - a category 5 was within a few hundred miles). Anyways… They had hoped to head for Ephrata when they got home but being the wonderful daughter that I am *wink* I got them to spend the night. We had visited Big5 earlier in the evening and purchased two camping cots, so we promised them they’d be able to sleep this time. :) They did.

20070908-61Saturday morning we cooked up some Belgium waffles (yum!) with strawberry sauce (my fave!). It was so good. After breakfast we did some crazy shopping (OK, Mommy did anyways!) Then we decided to head up to Seattle and go sailing (it was a beautiful sunny day, and pretty windy). But then we showed up at the pier and found out that all the sailings for the day were sold out! At that point Mommy & Daddy decided to spend that night with us and go sailing on Sunday after church so we bought our tickets and then headed off to (where else?) Ivars for lunch.

20070908-92If you read my blog at all you know that anytime family comes to town we hit up Ivars. :) Lunch was good. Afterwards I convinced my parents that they just HAD to see Discovery Park. Tobin was not very happy with that turn of events (he remembered the other time he went there), but he came along anyways (he had to, he was driving!). Last time I went out to the park was with Margie Lou and Kevin. There was a lovely beach, and I was telling everyone about it. 20070908-115It never dawned on me that maybe the tide would be up this time - it WAS! Barely any beach! Oh well it was still a really nice walk. For part of it we did get down onto the sand, and that was just really nice. The cruise ships went out again this time, so we watched that from the point by the lighthouse. It was so picturesque! I really do enjoy going out to Discovery Park. If you haven’t gone, you should try it sometime! :)

Tobin and I realized that we had a birthday party to go to that evening, so he ended up running all the way back to the car and driving it out to meet us (there is a road, but you need a parks permit to park). We made it20070909-119 back for the party (a little late but it was OK), and then headed off to Saturday evening prayer with our church.

Sunday we took my parents to church with us. They really liked it (even if they didn’t know a lot of the songs). As soon as church was out we booked it up to Seattle to go sailing. We couldn’t find a spot (it was crazy!!!), but Tobin made one (and we didn’t even get a ticket!). We sailed at 1:45, and man was it something! It was even windier Sunday than it had been on 20070909-74Saturday. Boy did we get our money’s worth out of our $25 tickets! We started out on the low side of the boat. That’s where we road last year… The guy came up and told us we might want to move to the high side but Tobin assured us that that would be dumb, and besides, we might be able to dangle our feet in the water on the low side. Well he was right! IT WAS SO SCARY! W20070909-80e got out there and started booking it, and the boat was all keeled over to the point where I almost felt like I was standing straight up. Problem was there wasn’t really anything to hold on to, and the only thing keeping me on the deck of the boat was a little 1 1/2 inch metal lip on the very edge of the boat. Tobin and Mommy were on either side of me, and they had some other metal they could put their feet on, but not me! I was really concerned that I was going to end up IN the water. Well luckily for us, none of us ended up swimming (though we did get our feet wet). Once the boat righted itself, the captain came up and joked about us not taking him seriously. He then helped us to the right side of the boat (the high side). :) Boy was I glad to have something to han20070909-95g onto (I dangled my legs over the edge to hold on).

The wind was blowing at 30mph once, and the boat was doing a constant speed of 12 knots. (For those of you not nautically inclined, that’s about 13.8 mph - and that felt really fast!) We ended up making it over to Bainbridge Island and back - in an hour. They said that they normally don’t even do that on the 2.5 hour cruise. (To put that in 20070909-140perspective, the ferry does the route in 35 minutes one way, so we were going faster than the ferry.)

It was super fun! I’m not sure we’ll be able to top that cruise! The captains said they’d give it a 10 out of 10. :) Mommy and Daddy really had a great time too, so that made it even more fun. :)

After sailing, we were super hungry, so we hit up a restaurant on the waterfront. Someone recommended that we check out the Crab Pot, so that’s where we headed. Tobin got a burger, and all the rest of us got a Salmon steak with potatoes. Yum! Just thinking about it is making me hungry! The food was great. 20070909-148We’ll definitely go back!

After eating, we headed back to our place, and M&D headed for home. It was really fun getting to spend the whole weekend with my parents (and not have to share them with either of my siblings - ha!). It was really fun, and I’m very glad that my parents are back from Mexico so we don’t have to worry about them getting into any hurricanes.

20070909-161Also, I must say that Daddy’s birthday was Sept. 13, so Happy Birthday (again) Daddy! I love you! And Mommy’s first day of school was today (though it’s basically inservice all this week). OK, I’m off to bed.

Be sure to check out all the pictures from this weekend here and here.

What a good time we had. Thanks for taking us to Discovery Park and sailing on “Neptune’s Car”. You got some very nice photos as well, especially of your pretty Mom!
