New Release

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Back when I had oodles of time I enjoyed working through Photoshop tutorials that I found across the web. I wish I still had that kind of time (not sure where it all went), but I did read a post at Photojojo about cool tutorials, and thought I’d give one a go. I learned a little about fill layers (I’d always done this a different way), so that was nice.

Here’s the final product…

Margie Lou finished out her junior college basketball career today… Her team is out of the playoffs for the NWAACC, but she played really well. Yesterday she had a triple-double. I think that was probably one of the best games of her career!

In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy DayHow to Survive and Thrive when Opportunity Roars

I just finished reading this book by Mark Batterson. I’d read a lot of positive things about the book before reading it, and I wasn’t disappointed. In fact I bought this book for many of the people on my Christmas list as I was convinced it was such a great book.

So what is the story about? Refer to the Bible passage below.

1 Chron 11:22-25

There was also Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heroic deeds, which included killing two champions of Moab. Another time, on a snowy day, he chased a lion down into a pit and killed it. Once, armed only with a club, he killed an Egyptian warrior who was 7½ feet tall and whose spear was as thick as a weaver’s beam. Benaiah wrenched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with it. Deeds like these made Benaiah as famous as the three mightiest warriors. He was more honored than the other members of the Thirty, though he was not one of the Three. And David made him captain of his bodyguard.

Researching the Church on the Web

Monday, December 4th, 2006

It’s finals week at City University, and like any good student I’m super stressed and working my tail off, getting all my papers done and being prepared for my final tests. The cool thing about the end of this quarter as opposed to the others I have gone through survived, is that I’ve gotten my teachers’ permission to write about something a bit more interesting than whether or not Biblesoft should adopt a data warehouse. Nope, this quarter, my final papers have been about my church, Neighborhood Life Center – and how I can improve (read: rebuild) its website. When I’m done with my last paper I’ll post all of them here for you to read.

In the course of my research for these papers, I’ve stumbled upon some great sites/podcasts. I’ll compile a full list later, but for now, here’s a post I found particularly good:

Stock Options in The Kingdom of Heaven

This is an interesting article (especially for me, a computer scientist) about a man who made it big at Microsoft, then gave it all up to start a church… It’s all about that Heavenly Perspective. We get so caught up with living life day-to-day, that we can forget the real reason we’re here – to make a difference for eternity!

I found out about Mark Batterson (and his blog) after listening to Episode Two of the Creative Synergy Podcast. The interview (and the whole podcast) was very interesting – I’d encourage you to check it out (in fact listen to all three of the Creative Synergy Podcasts if you have the time).

Ok, back to work (and then my homework!).

Solar Power, etc.

Tobin’s a sucker for energy efficient home design. He thinks solar panels are the best (another reason to move to Eastern WA I say!). So when I came across these articles, I was pretty sure he’d be very interested.

A zero energy home in Oklahoma
Home builders switch on the ‘invisible’ solar panels

So what do you think? Would you build a zero energy home for under $200K? Maybe by the time we purchase/build our next house, this will be more mainstream.

AJAX

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

AJAX is great. Yes it has been hyped all over the place – and used just for the sake of using AJAX, but it actually has some pretty great and unobtrusive uses. Take for example my portfolio page. I used lightbox js for the pop-ups. Pretty cool huh? (In case you’re really wondering, I actually used a combination of lightbox and a little WordPress plugin modified from Wei Chen’s ZenP to read and display my Portfolio album.)

I just ran across Max Keisler’s Round-up of 50 AJAX Tookits and Frameworks. I haven’t had much of a chance to look at this, but I’m excited to begin adding some more ease-of-use to my site…

I also took a look at the AJAX Slideshow listings. I’ll see how hard it is to implement an AJAX slideshow with Zenphoto. This would be especially great for Youth, where I’d like to run a slideshow directly from the website without having to boot up my external HD.

I’ve never really liked Flash. You can probably thank Dr. G for that as the accessibility research I did for him highlighted how inaccessible Flash was (I hear it’s getting better, but I’m still not interested). So AJAX is pretty exciting for me – as it allows me to do some cool effects that were previously only available using Flash.
